Two seasons, one city: planning Mardi Gras 2027 and Jazz Fest 2027

New Orleans has two tent-poles, eleven weeks apart: Mardi Gras Day on Tuesday 9 February 2027, and Jazz Fest across 22 April to 2 May. They work in opposite ways, they book out on opposite clocks, and the city between them is not a gap but a third season. The planner for doing one, the other, or both.

Most cities have a big event. New Orleans has a big season, twice a year, and the two could not work more differently. Carnival ends with a free festival that takes over the streets and belongs to everyone. Jazz Fest is a ticketed city inside a racetrack, eleven weeks later, that half a million people walk into on purpose. Our Mardi Gras hub and Jazz Fest hub carry the full detail for each. This is the planner that sits above them: the clocks, the differences, and the case for the weeks in between.

Carnival: the free one, and the earlier clock

Carnival season opens on Twelfth Night, 6 January, and builds for five weeks to Mardi Gras Day, Tuesday 9 February 2027. The dates that matter for a visitor are the final five days. Endymion rolls through Mid-City on the Saturday night, Bacchus down the Uptown route on Sunday, Lundi Gras on Monday 8 February brings the Zulu festival on the riverfront and Orpheus at night, and on Tuesday morning Zulu and then Rex close the season before the police sweep the streets at midnight and Lent begins.

Nothing about the parades costs anything to watch, and that is the trap in the planning. The festival is free; the beds are not. Rooms for the final weekend are the scarcest commodity in the city's year, and the good positions, on or near the St. Charles route in the Garden District and Uptown, or in the French Quarter and the CBD, are taken months out, at the year's highest rates, often with minimum stays. The rule is brutal and simple: for Mardi Gras, the hotel is the ticket, and you buy it first. Our first-timer's guide has the parade-by-parade detail; the stay choice itself is between the route and the Quarter, and our area buttons are the working start:

One daytime anchor belongs in every Carnival trip: Mardi Gras World, the workshop where the floats you are watching are built, open for tours through the season. It books direct on its own site, and it is the fastest way to understand what the parades actually are before you stand in front of one.

The weeks between: not a gap

Carnival ends in February. Jazz Fest starts in late April. Between them, New Orleans does not rest; it downshifts into its locals' season of smaller festivals, crawfish and perfect weather. The bridge event is the French Quarter Festival in April, four free days of Louisiana music on stages across the Vieux Carré, and for many regulars the single best weekend of the year: the city at festival pitch without festival prices. Our French Quarter Festival guide covers it. If you can only afford one trip and crowds are your worry, that weekend is the insider's answer.

Jazz Fest: the ticketed one, and the later clock

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival runs across two four-day weekends at the Fair Grounds Race Course in Gentilly: Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 April, and Thursday 29 April to Sunday 2 May 2027. Gates open at 11am and the music ends at 7pm, after which the city's clubs take the night shift for the famous late shows. A dozen stages and tents run at once, the food is a festival inside the festival, and the grounds are cashless.

Jazz Fest's clock runs the other way from Carnival's. The line-up is the trigger: it is expected in December, and tickets go on sale through the festival's official site when it drops, which is when the planning genuinely starts. Hotels for the two weekends fill hard but later than Mardi Gras, and the choice is wider: the Fair Grounds is a short hop from the Quarter, the CBD and the Marigny, and all of them work as bases. Our Jazz Fest 2027 guide carries the ticket and weekend detail; for rooms, the CBD and Marigny lists are the value positions once the Quarter prices up:

Choosing, or doing both

Do Mardi Gras if you want the city itself as the show, and you can book early and pay peak rates without flinching. Do Jazz Fest if you want the music concentrated, ticketed and sunlit, with a December decision point and a wider choice of rooms. Do both if you can: they are far enough apart to plan separately, and together they are the complete New Orleans, the street and the stage.

Either way, the year has a rhythm and the announcements drive it: Carnival rooms now, the Jazz Fest line-up in December, Jazz Fest rooms after that. Set a New Orleans What's On alert and we will email you when the line-up lands and when the big listings change. This is a city that rewards the people who plan like locals: early, and around the music.
