The area
Uptown is where nineteenth-century money built its houses, and where a good part of the city actually lives: oak-shaded streets, the mansions of St. Charles Avenue, the shops and restaurants of Magazine Street, and Audubon Park at the top. It moves slower than downtown and sleeps far better, and what it asks in return is a streetcar ride home rather than a walk.
Getting around
The St. Charles streetcar runs the length of the avenue, from Canal Street through the Garden District to Carrollton, at $1.25 a ride or $3 for a one-day Jazzy Pass. Most big Uptown parades roll on St. Charles itself, so in Carnival season the route is your front yard, and the streetcars stop while parades pass. The French Quarter is a streetcar ride away, not a walk.
